Alumni Spotlight - Jill Grieve Cantin

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 1When did you attend Lamphere?  What schools did you attend?:
Sixma Elementary, Edmonson Elementary, John Page Middle School and Lamphere High School

Where do you live now?  Novi, Michigan

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 2Tell us about what you've been doing since graduation:
I attended Central Michigan University for my undergraduate studies. I graduated from CMU in 1993 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. I went on to complete my graduate studies at Oakland University. I received a Masters Degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Leadership.
Following the completion of my Bachelors Degree from CMU, I was hired by Lamphere Schools, as an elementary school teacher. Ironically, I began my teaching career at Edmonson Elementary School where I attended school as a child. During my time as a classroom teacher (1993-2002), I taught every grade level with the exception of first grade. I knew that someday I wanted to move up the ladder to the administrative level. I found teaching each grade level to be beneficial. I had first hand experience and was better able to support other colleagues.

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 5Upon completion of my Masters Degree in 2001, I became an Assistant Principal at an elementary school for Hamtramck Public Schools. After approximately three years, I became an elementary school principal in Hamtramck. I spent from (2002-2007) in Hamtramck.

In 2007, I left Hamtramck and became an elementary school principal for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. During my time with P-CCS, I was a Principal, the Director of State and Federal Programs and have recently returned to the classroom to complete my last five years in the field of education.

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 6My K-12 experience with Lamphere Schools provided me with the knowledge and tools needed to ensure that I was prepared for college. I am grateful to so many LHS staff members who provided guidance and support so that meeting my goal of becoming an educator a reality.

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 3Tell us about your family and/or hobbies:
I have two beautiful children. My daughter Sydney graduated from Novi High School. She currently attends The University of Michigan in Dearborn. My son Mitchell is currently in 10th grade at Novi High School. He loves working with all types of technology. I am truly blessed to be the mother of my wonderful kids.

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 4How did your years at Lamphere affect your life?
My years at Lamphere affected my life significantly. I participated in many academic and sports functions over my four years at LHS. I was the president of the class of 1988 for four years. I was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Activities Group. I made Varsity Cheerleading my Freshman Year and cheered all four years. I ran track for two years and played softball for two years. I was also fortunate to become the Homecoming Queen. Each of these activities helped to build leadership skills, provided me with the skills to work collaboratively with others and modeled what commitment and responsibility look like.

Jill Cantin Alumni Spotlight 6If you had a message for current Lamphere students what would it be?
A message I would send to current Lamphere students would be to work hard, have fun and to remember that they can do anything they set their minds to.
